The 2019 story of redstart at Théding:
A novelty 2019: the redstart!
The nest is installed on a beam against a wall, just below the roof of the house. The redstart used metal spikes to fix their nest. It also protects them from predators.
Nest construction
From one year to the next, the redstart prefer to build a new nest, even a few meters from previous location. The nest was already built before the installation of the camera, but we can observe on this video the finishing touched on the construction made only by the female.
Egg laying
The laying began on May 6th. The female lays 1 egg a day (usually in the morning) until 4 to 7.
Brooding
The male (black) will feed the female (brown) during brooding, which will last about 2 weeks.
The births
The female removes the eggshells and both parents start feeding the chicks. The births will be in chain during the day. (23/05)
The growth of offsprings
The growth of the chicks is fast: they will spend 2 weeks in the nest before flying off. At the exit from the nest, the chicks do not necessarily know how to fly, they will spend time on the ground, hidden in the bushes. Parents will continue to feed them for another 3 weeks.
The flight of the 5 redstart
The flight of this brood was brutal: in the middle of the night, disturbed by a predator, the chicks jumped out of the nest to go to shelter. Rest assured, the parents probably found them at daybreak.
A 2nd nestled
The redstart started a second brood shortly after the first. Only one chick will be born from this brood.
